Recent Award

At the end of May, I participated with several other artists in a special one-day painting event on the grounds of Glen Eyrie Castle in Colorado Springs. We painted all around the area throughout the morning, and at noon we framed our paintings and submitted them for judging. Skip Whitcomb was the judge for the event and he chose my painting Light Through the Trees (pictured above) for the First Place award. Thank you Skip, Gary Bradley and the many others who made the event possible. Click here to see my other painting from the paint-out.
Workshop: Plein Air Painting

There is still some space available in my upcoming three-day plein air painting workshop through Cottonwood Center for the Arts in Colorado Springs. The workshop will take place June 26th - 28th, 2009. Plein air painting requires an approach that is somewhat unique; it also poses many of its own difficulties. How do you choose your subject? What is the best way to set up? How do you compete with the changing light conditions? How do you translate the vast outdoors onto a small canvas? These kinds of questions will be addressed during the workshop while we paint at different locations in Colorado Springs. Click here for more information.
Workshop: Drawing and Painting Portraits

I'll be teaching a three-day workshop on drawing and painting portraits through Cottonwood Center for the Arts in Colorado Springs July 31st - August 2nd, 2009. Portraits are among the most difficult subjects an artist can undertake due to their need for accuracy. This workshop will be an intensive three days focusing on drawing and painting portraits from live models and will include a review of the fundamentals necessary to create a strong portrait. Compositional methods, tips for achieving accuracy, keys to correctly seeing value and color, and tips on working with edges will be discussed and utilized. We will also talk in depth about color theory. Click here for more information.
