Painting with Scott Burdick

In Feburary, Scott Burdick invited me to come paint with him at his home and studio in North Carolina. I eagerly accepted the offer, and Sarah joined me for the trip. Scott and his wife, Sue Lyon, are both so generous with their knowledge and are such great artists that it was an incredible learning experience for me.

Here I am with Scott in his studio painting a model named Beth that he hired for one of the mornings we were there. It was great getting to look at Scott's progress during our breaks and having him give me pointers on my painting as well. In the background, you can see a large painting (and his reference photo) in progress from his and Sue's trip to Tibet.

Trip to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

In April, I joined a group of nine other artists for a week of painting in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. It turned out to be a very productive and wonderful trip. I ended up doing 17 small paintings during the week, but I also took lots of photos to bring home for more painting ideas.

This is the entryway to our house as viewed from inside the open air courtyard. The street out front was hot, noisy, and filled with diesel exhaust fumes from passing cars and trucks, but as soon as the front door was closed, it was cool, quiet, and peaceful inside the house. We all enjoyed the house so much, we almost didn't want to venture out of the house to paint!

Stairway

As a result, we all ended up doing several paintings inside the house.
This is my painting Stairway, Oil On Linen, 8 x 10 inches.

This is the view from the second floor balcony looking down into the courtyard.

Here is part of the upstairs hallway.

This is a view from the roof of the house which also had a bedroom surrounded by windows (it's visible on the right).

Finally, a view of the city! (Another view from the roof of our house.) There were many elaborate churches complete with domes and spires as we surveyed the area.

View of San Miguel

This is my painting View of San Miguel de Allende (Oil on Linen, 6 x 10 inches) that I did from that spot.

Mexico 06

This is the city's main plaza which seemed to be constantly flooded with people. Even after dark we were interested to see local children wandering around with their families while dancers, musicians, and vendors kept the plaza alive with movement.

These guys aren't from around here I don't think! That's actually part of our group as we headed out to dinner one evening. (Unfortunately, I didn't have enough memory cards for my camera so I didn't end up with many good shots of our group.) Anyway, left to right are Andi Mascareñas, Shannon Smith (her sister Jennifer was also there), Kim English, and Chuck Mardosz. Further ahead in the photo you can kind of see Diana Love and her sister Janice. Rita Cirillo and Jane Chapin were also lurking around somewhere.

Mexico 08

This is one of the many local flower vendors near the plaza. She has a lot to choose from!

Morning Market

This is one of the paintings I did of her after the trip, Morning Market, Oil on Linen, 20 x 9 inches.

Mexico 09

San Miguel reminded me a little of Spain with all the colorful buildings connected together along the streets.

Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters' National Show

In July, Sarah and I traveled to Jackson, Wyoming for the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters' National Show. About 30 artists participated in the event by painting around Jackson, in Grand Teton National Park, and even in Yellowstone National Park. We then turned in our paintings for the show at the end of the week.

Here I am painting at Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park. The resulting painting On Jenny Lake ended up winning the Artists' Choice award at the show.

Sarah and I did a whirlwind trip through Yellowstone one of the days we were there. Here's a shot of the famous Lower Falls.

And what trip through Yellowstone would be complete without seeing Old Faithful?

Art of Living Show

In September, the Gallery at Rich Designs hosted the first annual Art of Living Show to Benefit Pikes Peak Hospice. I did a painting especially for the show that was inspired by my recent trip to Mexico.

The painting was hung in the entryway of the gallery which was a beautiful spot, especially when combined with all of the festive decorations. Sarah and I weren't able to attend the show opening, but the painting ended up auctioning for more than its retail price (since there were several people interested in it). All the extra money raised went to Pikes Peak Hospice.
