Cottonwood Artists' School Fundraiser
Friday, February 3rd, Cottonwood Artists' School held a fundraiser. The school wanted to thank one of its generous supporters, Chuck Murphy, for all of his help over the years. As one of the school's instructors, I was commissioned to paint a portrait of Chuck's wife, Mary Lou, as a surprise gift for him to be unveiled at the event. Mary Lou graciously posed for me to paint her and both she and Chuck enjoyed receiving the finished product.

Here I am with Mary Lou and Chuck Murphy. (Thanks to Kay Jeansonne for this photo.)
Trip to St. Petersburg, Florida
February 10th through 14th, Sarah and I traveled to Florida for a gallery show at Alla Prima Fine Art. We both greatly looked forward to some warm Florida weather with this chance to escape Colorado's February chill. Unfortunately, Florida experienced the coldest week of the year during our stay! Oh well, at least I got a little painting done. (The show was lots of fun too.)

Here I am painting (wearing the warmest clothes I brought!) as the sun was setting.

This is the finished painting, Evening Light, Oil on Linen, 6 x 8 inches.

Rita Cirillo also attended the show, so she and I painted Sarah one afternoon while we enjoyed some brief sunshine and a little break from the wind. This is my painting of Sarah, Reading in the Sun, Oil on Linen, 8 x 6 inches.
Plein Air Painting in North Carolina
In April, I traveled to Germanton, North Carolina for a plein air painting event held at Germanton Gallery. About 25 artists participated and I enjoyed getting to paint with many of them.

Scott Burdick invited a group of us one morning to paint a model at his house. We all gathered around and had a great time! (Thanks to Scott for this photo!)

This is my finished painting of Courtney, Under the Tree, Oil on Linen, 10 x 8 inches.

Here's Scott Burdick painting one of his masterpieces. Since he lives in the area, he let several of us other artists follow him around to some of his favorite painting spots. We spent a lot of time at a farm near his house which is where this photo was taken. We probably painted there at least three or four times during the week.

Here I am trying my best to get a decent painting finished for the show! (After all, I guess that's why I went on this trip to begin with.)

During the opening reception at the gallery, all the artists voted for their favorite painting and this painting of mine, Winding Stream (Oil on Linen, 8 x 10 inches), ended up winning the award which was quite an unexpected honor.
Before I left for home, I decided to buy this drawing by Sue Lyon. Sarah and I had wanted to buy something of hers since we had first met her (and her husband Scott Burdick). We had purchased two of Scott's drawings in 2005, and we both loved this drawing of Sue's. Isn't it great?
Salon International
In May, Sarah and I traveled to San Antonio, Texas for the 2006 Salon International juried exhibition. The event took place at Greenhouse Gallery where over 300 paintings were included for the show. The two paintings of mine that were chosen for the exhibit are pictured below.

Confident, Oil on Linen, 12 x 9 inches

Morning Mist, Oil on Linen, 12 x 16 inches

We enjoyed the great artwork in the show and the opportunity to meet several other artists and the staff at the gallery.
Plein Air Painting Class
In July, I taught a plein air painting class through Cottonwood Artists' School. We went to various locations around Colorado Springs to paint the beautiful scenery.

Here I am doing a painting demonstration for the class at Garden of the Gods park.

Here is the resulting painting, Summertime, Oil on Linen, 8 x 10 inches.
Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters' National Show
In August, I traveled to Winter Park, Colorado for the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters' National Show. There were about 60 artists who participated in the event by painting around Winter Park and Rocky Mountain National Park for a week. Then we all turned in our wet paintings to Elk Horn Gallery for the show.

This is one of the five paintings I turned in for the show, Forest Shadows, Oil on Linen, 9 x 12 inches.

The day after the show opened, many of the artists participated in the "quick draw." Two hours were given for us to complete a painting which would then be framed and offered for sale in an auction format. This photo is of me hurriedly trying to finish my painting of Clive Tyler, one of the other artists in the event. (He was too tired to paint in the quick draw, so we asked him to pose!)
Art of Living Show
Saturday, September 30th was the 2nd Annual Art of Living Show to benefit Pikes Peak Hospice. It was held at The Gallery at Rich Designs in Colorado Springs, Colorado. During the opening of the show in the gallery, my wife Sarah was kind enough to pose for me to paint her outside while visitors watched and enjoyed the rest of the festivities. Several other artists in the show painted that day as well. (Thanks to our friends Chris and Valeen Tschamler and Rienet van der Linde for these great photos!)

Here is the finished painting, Sitting in the Sun, Oil on Linen, 12 x 9 inches.
