Trip to Washington D.C.

Sarah and I traveled to Washington D.C. in early July to see some friends and all the sights that our nation's capitol has to offer. We were able to see many of the monuments and memorials as well as several museums.

The Capitol Building

DC 02

Jefferson Memorial where we sat with the crowd to watch the fireworks on July 4th.

DC 03

Our view of the fireworks and the Washington Monument.

DC 04

Perhaps you recognize this self-portrait by Rembrandt that we saw at the National Gallery of Art.

DC 05

Here's another familiar painting by Claude Monet from the National Gallery.

DC 06

We saw this painting at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. I was quite surprised to find that it was painted by none other than John Singer Sargent.

Also at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, we enjoyed learning about an artist named Abbott Handerson Thayer who painted this beautiful still life. He also painted some wonderful figurative works.

Painting Workshop

In July, I taught a three-day painting workshop through Cottonwood Artists' School in Colorado Springs, Colorado. We painted clothed figures both indoors and outdoors, while focusing on the differences in color when in these different environments. I didn't end up with any photos of the group when we were painting indoors, but I included a few photos of us painting outdoors below.

Shady Spot

On our first day outside, I did this demonstration painting of Sarah, Shady Spot, Oil on Linen, 12 x 9 inches.

Later that day, we painted Sarah again (she's hiding under the tree in the background).

Workshop 02

On the last day, we spent the morning painting Natalie next to a beautiful pond.

Workshop 03

We also painted Tassie in the afternoon near the same pond.

Workshop 04

I think we all enjoyed three great days of intense painting!

Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters' National Show

In July, I traveled to Winter Park, Colorado for the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters' National Show. There were about 60 artists who participated in the event by painting around Winter Park and Rocky Mountain National Park for a week. Then we all turned in our wet paintings to Elk Horn Gallery for the show.

Here I am getting started on one of my paintings for the show.

Morning Haze

This is the finished painting, Morning Haze, Oil on Linen, 11 x 14 inches.

The day after the show opened, many of the artists participated in the "quick draw." Two hours were given for us to complete a painting which would then be framed and offered for sale in an auction format. Here I am with my wet painting of Sarah who graciously posed for several of us to paint.

Pikes Peak

In August, Sarah and I climbed Pikes Peak together for the first time. It wasn't really an art event, but it was a fun accomplishment for us. I had climbed the Peak once before from Barr Trail on the east side of the Peak, but this time we decided to climb from the west side along the Crags Trail. We were joined for the climb by Sarah's dad, one of Sarah's sisters, and one other friend. We started early in the morning before it was light so we would have enough time to make the climb and be sure to be on our way back down (and off the top of the mountain) for any unexpected storms. Fortunately, there weren't any storms that day, so it was a smooth climb.

There's Sarah leading the way in the first section of the climb as the sun started to lighten the sky.

Time for a rest! Sarah and her dad on the trail as we approached timberline.

Pikes Peak 03

That's the summit of Pikes Peak in the upper left corner of the photo. You can also see the Pikes Peak Highway ahead of us (which always makes climbers feel somewhat disgruntled since people can just drive up the mountain in their car).

Pikes Peak 04

We were fairly close to the summit at this point. You can see the city of Colorado Springs off in the distance to the east.

Pikes Peak 05

This photo was taken from that same spot, looking toward the north.

Pikes Peak 06

About 6 miles of climbing finally brought us to the summit. Here's the view to the east.

Pikes Peak 07

Here's our happy group! (Not too happy that we have to go back down though.)

The long journey back.

Victor Celebrates the Arts

At the end of August, the 8th Annual Victor Celebrates the Arts plein air painting competition took place. I had been asked to be the awards judge for the event which took place in Victor, Colorado. Over one hundred paintings were entered into the show by the participating artists who had spent the previous week painting the area around the mountain town. There were many strong pieces of artwork in the show and I was honored to be chosen to give out the awards.

A nice banquet for the artists was given which Sarah and I attended before the awards presentation.

As the award-winning pieces were presented, I enjoyed the chance to talk a little bit about each painting and why I had chosen it for an award.
