Supply List (Advanced Painting)


  • Several photos to paint from (4" x 6" or larger)
  • Small sketch pad and pencil
  • Canvases - whatever size you prefer
  • A few sticks of vine charcoal (for preliminary drawings)
  • Kneaded Eraser
  • Gamsol or odorless mineral spirits (no turpentine products, please)
  • Container for holding mineral spirits and cleaning brushes
  • Palette for mixing paint
  • Palette knife for painting and cleaning palette
  • Paper towels
  • Trash bag for used paper towels
Besides the items listed above, you may bring whatever other supplies you are most comfortable with. If you wish to use the same paint and brushes that I use, they are listed below.
  • Brushes I use:
    • #2, #4, #6, #8 bristle flats (I use Holbein's Killington bristle flats, available locally at Meininger's, but the brand doesn't really matter as long as the bristles don't fall out too easily).
    • #2, #4, #8, #12 sable flats (I use Royal & Langnickel sable flats, series 5590, available online at Cheap Joe's Art Stuff).
  • Paint (oils):
    • Titanium White (Utrecht, Winsor & Newton or Gamblin)
    • Cadmium Yellow (M. Graham & Co.) or Cadmium Yellow Pale (Winsor & Newton)
    • Cadmium Red (M. Graham & Co. or Winsor & Newton)
    • Alizarin Permanent (Gamblin), or Alizarin Crimson
    • Ultramarine Deep (Rembrandt) or Ultramarine Blue (Gamblin) or French Ultramarine (Winsor & Newton)
    • Viridian (Winsor & Newton or Gamblin)
    • Ivory Black (M. Graham & Co., Winsor & Newton or Gamblin)
    • Cadmium Lemon (Winsor & Newton)
    • Cadmium Yellow Deep (Utrecht or Winsor & Newton)
    • Yellow Ochre (Gamblin or Winsor & Newton)
    • Terra Rosa (Winsor & Newton) or Venetian Red (Gamblin)
    • Transparent Oxide Red (Rembrandt) or Transparent Earth Red (Gamblin)
    • Cobalt Blue (Gamblin or M. Graham & Co.)
