This workshop will explore my process of painting figures in the landscape, including the differences between painting outdoors and painting indoors. We will hopefully spend much of the time painting live models outside (depending on weather), but will also practice in an indoor setting. Lighting differences will be talked about in depth, as well as how color is affected by the different kinds of light sources. We will also discuss how to best use photography in these settings to serve as source material for studio work.

Portraits are among the most difficult subjects an artist can undertake due to their need for accuracy. This workshop will be an intensive three days focusing on drawing and painting portraits from live models and will include a review of the fundamentals necessary to create a strong portrait. Compositional methods, tips for achieving accuracy, keys to correctly seeing value and color, and tips on working with edges will be discussed and utilized. We will also talk in depth about color theory.
